How many times have your heard "Stand up straight"?
Well, the old admonishment has a lot of merit.
According to the American College of Rheumatology, approximately two-thirds
of adults will have experienced back pain at some point in their life.
Many factors can contribute to back pain: poor muscle tone, excess weight,
poor posture and sitting or standing too long in one position.Good posture
is integral in promoting healthy lifestyles. Let's take a look at some
back basics that are key to maintaining proper body mechanics.
Standing posture
When standing, double-check to make sure that
your ears, shoulders, hips and knees are all in alignment. Here are some
other tips to keep in mind:
-
Lift your chest and rib cage
-
Tuck in your stomach
-
Relax your shoulders
-
Tuck in your chin
Sitting posture
When sitting, there should be a 90-degree angle
at your torso and upper legs. Also, make sure of the following:
-
Sit up straight without slouching
-
Ensure that your chair is firm and supports
your back
Exercise is also a key factor in maintaining
a healthy back. Staying in shape is beneficial in preventing back pain
as well as maintaining good posture.
